FINAL WORDS ON EFFECTIVE PARENTING
FINAL WORDS ON EFFECTIVE PARENTING
So far we have discussed maternal behaviour and infant-mother attachment, dimensions of child-rearing, parenting styles and the use of punishment in parenting. From all these, one may ask the question: are there some “basic rules” for effective parenting? Five key principles can be identified;
1. SET HIGH, BUT REASONABLE STANDARDS.
Children should be expected to behave in socially acceptable manner for their age and to do as well as they can in school and in other activities. Parents who do not expect much from their children are teaching them not to expect much from themselves.
2. STAY ALERT FOR “GOOD” BEHAVIOUR AND REWARD IT.
Most parents pay attention to children when they are misbehaving and ignore them when they are being good. This is not progressive ! Develop the habit of praising good behaviour so a child knows what you want.
3. EXPLAIN YOUR REASONS WHEN YOU ASK A
CHILD TO DO SOMETHING. Do not expect that a child can read your mind.
4. ENCOURAGE CHILDREN TO TAKE THE PERSPECTIVE OF OTHERS.
Talk to children about the effects of their behaviour on others. This approach fosters moral development and empathy in children.
5. ENFORCE RULE CONSISTENTLY.
Children need to have a clear idea about what is expected of them and the consequences when they fail to meet standards. This practice fosters self-control.

Thanks for this engaging post. Really brought out my flaws as a parent. I am already adjusting. Thanks ADMIN!
That’s good to hear. Thank you
I actually sent a link of this site post to my aunty. She believes too much in her job that she never have time for her kids. three days ago, her daughter in secondary school was caught with a cigarette , smoking in the female toilet, until she was caught by the house mistress. If you do not find time to train your child , so they know right from wrong, then you are creating a path to their downfall. A word is enough for the wise.
Totally in agreement with you. Thank you
I agree that children should be encourage to bring out the best in them. They know more beyond our imagination. Lets not kill their creativity jare
I praise my daughter all the time for doing things right. Please lets not use giving of money to praise our children. Giving them money is like we exposing them. Handshake, lifting them up if they are still little, taking them out for fun are ways to do this.

Children need to have a clear idea about what is expected of them and the consequences when they fail to meet standards-With this we will be teaching our kids how to set goals at a tender age. Setting goals is vital for success in life, and not just setting goals, but accomplishing such goals. I do love the writers style of writing. Straight to the point.
There are lots of abuse from lots of parents on their children ALL IN THE NAME OF PUNISHMENT or discipline as some of them will say. They need to be enlightened through this post or maybe the school organise a seminar on this. Thanks for this post. Really this is new, and I appreciate the school for this. Is there a way we can get your prospectus online. I mean to download it.

Nice content. Please do continue with this good post. Am learning a lot from them. God bless you.
One thing is clear. Parents should set Target and also limit to which children should “explore”, being authoritative or permissive should come with the scenario involved . If we fail to instruct our children the difference between good and evil character, such neglect will surely come back to hunt us. Remember they are the leaders of tomorrow and we the parents will soon grow old and feeble. Let’s be wise in our actions. Thank you.
Just read all the series. Quite educative. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks .
Effective parenting skills cannot be bought. It needs to be develop over time with experience.
Parenting can be a tough one, especially for those who don’t understand what it takes. Applying effective parenting skills is on another level on its own. Nice post. Thanks for sharing.
I always set a target for my children especially during test or examination period in their school. I will always challenge them to come out one of the top three in their class, and wait has always work for me. I treat them to an outing , and they always look forward to this.
The parenting tips here are all on point. Can one copy for reference purposes
I will like to inquire here, if the school is strictly for Christians, or Muslims too can enroll. I am a Muslim and I would want my daughter enrolled in your school come next session, but I need to know if it is strictly a Christian school.
Most kids nowadays what they know why you are asking them not to do a particular thing but the other different from their choice. They will ask “why”, to all that you say. Why this, why that? Sometimes we might get irritated by this small act, but then we have to accommodate them and explain as much as we can by coming down to their level. That is one of the characteristics of an effective parent. If we don’t give answers to their questions, someone else will.
There have to be a clear distinction between what is good and what is wrong. Parents must spell it our clearly. Why allowing room for permissiveness , it should be defined with boundaries.
Good one. Thanks
Love this. You all have made solid points
May God just help us with the training of this children. You know we do all these things mentioned in the post, and we still see children becoming tout on the streets. Displaying all ill-manner characters we cannot even describe, and yet their parents have put in the best they can. For me, I just believe as King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal said in one of his songs..Iya ti bi mi na, emi na, ma tun’ra mi bi..simply means My mother has given birth to me, I too need to go through a rebirth on my own.
Most of this kids go on a rebirth to the wrong path. What really can we do, that to pray for God’s help.
For a school to start a blog like this to teach parents, I believe they know what they are doing and I really appreciate this. Thank you whoever the proprietor or proprietress of the school is. This is a great development. Keep it up.
As much as I agree with you @Mrs. Adenuga, yes we will pray, but then God in his infinite wisdom has given us the grace, wisdom and responsibility to take care of this children the right way. We are oblige to do so. It is mandatory as parents. We must train our child the way they should go, if they decide to go the other way when they grow up, then its their choice to make.
We have to put in our best as parents. Effectiveness in all that we do is the key. Lets find a way to eliminate negative peer pressure and wrong movies from their lives. Things we certainly go well, if we now use prayer to back it up. Action first.
